A Psychophysiological Study of Lavender Odorant

چکیده
In the present experiment the effect of the lavender odorant to human beings was investigated. Japanese version of Cox and Mackay's stress / arousal adjective checklist (J-SACL) , blood pressure, heart rate, stroop test, non-spatial working memory task and the computed electroencephalography (cEEG) was performed before and after the lavender odorants stimulation. The results indicated that lavender odorants have an anti-stress effect and reduce the arousal state in J-SACL, although lavender odorants did not influence blood pressure, heart rate, stroop test and non-spatial working memory task. Furthermore, the power spectrum of theta 1 (F4) was increased and beta 1 waves in T3, 01, P4 and F4 were decreased in the lavender stimulated group. These results suggest that the lavender odorants reduce an electrophysiological arousal state.

Expectancies, not aroma, explain impact of lavender aromatherapy on psychophysiological indices of relaxation in young healthy women.
OBJECTIVES In aromatherapy, lavender aroma is reputed to assist with relaxation. However, while there is much anecdotal evidence to that effect, the empirical literature is very inconsistent. Failure to employ adequate placebos, proper blinding, objective measures, or screening of prior beliefs about aromatherapy means that many previous findings could have been influenced by expectancy biases....
متن کاملDifferential Neural Responses Evoked by Orthonasal versus Retronasal Odorant Perception in Humans
Odors perceived through the mouth (retronasally) as flavor are referred to the oral cavity, whereas odors perceived through the nose (orthonasally) are referred to the external world. We delivered vaporized odorants via the orthonasal and retronasal routes and measured brain response with fMRI. Comparison of retronasal versus orthonasal delivery produced preferential activity in the mouth area ...
متن کاملOdor hedonics: connection with emotional response estimated by autonomic parameters.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between self-report hedonic evaluations and the physiological expression of emotion in response to odorants. We try to solve the following questions: (1) Is it possible to find any experimental evidence that the sense of smell is linked with emotion? (2) What kind of odorants can be distinguished by autonomic analysis? (3) Is there a link bet...
متن کاملThe influence of odorants on respiratory patterns in sleep.
To assess the feasibility of using odors as a potential mechanism for treating sleep apnea, we set out to test the hypothesis that odorants delivered during sleep would modify respiratory patterns without inducing arousal or wake in healthy sleepers. We used 2 mildly trigeminal odorants: the pleasant lavender and unpleasant vetiver oil and 2 pure olfactory odorants: the pleasant vanillin and un...
